Singapore finally has a poké bar to call our own. Pronounced as poh-kay, the word refers to slicing or cutting in Hawaiian. A popular dish amongst surfers, it is a fish salad of sorts and usually comprises of seasoned Ahi tuna tossed with toasted sesame seeds, sweet onions and scallions.
Similar to many salad joints, diners get to choose from three different sized bowls, starting from the Lil’ Swell (1 scoop of poké, 75g, for $11.90), to the Standard Nalu (2 scoops of poké, $15.90), and the Big Kahuna (3 scoops, $19.90). Besides tuna, diners can choose from salmon and vegetarian options, accompanied by sauces such as wasabi mayo, spicy sauce, nutty sesame and original sauce.
Other add-ons include a base of white rice, brown rice, salad or kale, and fresh or crunchy toppings in the form of vegetables, fruits, fish roe and nuts. Superfood such as avocado, chia seeds, pomegranate or quail’s egg are also available. To make dining decisions easier, go for the the ready-made Standard Nalu Tuna or Nalu Salmon bowl.
A good mix of beverage options are also available; Cocoloco, cracked daily from fresh Thai coconuts, and cold press juices from A Juicery. For those looking to start happy hour early, Kona Beer from a craft brewery in Hawaii and Brother’s Cider, are perfect accompaniment to a bowl of super fresh poké.
